McCallum
McCallum is very different from the cotton plantations like Saragossa and Mount Locust in other parts of Mississippi. The area is characterized by poor soils and was not suited to large cotton plantations. Nevertheless, thousands of African Americans were enslaved in the Pine Hills. Most farms focused on raising cattle and exporting them elsewhere (such as plantation country around Natchez). The slave holdings in the Pine Hills were much smaller than those in the cotton-growing regions of Mississippi. So while little cotton was grown here, the area was famous for its cattle production. Cattle herding did not require large labor forces.
