Historical Notes

James S. Douglass Sr. left the plantation in his will to his wife, Emeline Evans Douglass and his brothers, Stephen Douglass and Archibald Douglass. In 1840, a parish judge ordered the sale of Buck Ridge Plantation, slaves, cattle, corn, etc. The property was purchased by Emeline Evans Douglass and Arhibald Douglass, James' brother.

Jacob Stewart, the great great grandfather of researcher Edward B. Adams, became an agent on the Buck Ridge Plantation while working there after the Civil War. Jacob was born in Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi in 1830. He became a slave on the Rifle Point Plantation, Concordia Parish, Mississippi, after being bought while a small boy by Dr. Samuel Gustine. Jacob married Ellen Hall on the Buck Ridge Plantation. Ellen was born on the Hole-In-The-Wall Plantation, Concordia Parish, Louisiana. Jacob and Ellen remarried years later in Natchez, Mississippi after obtaining an official marriage license.
