Historical notes

Frank Bell

In his narrative, ex-slave Frank Bell recalls being the only personal slave owned by Johnson Bell, a Frenchman. As a young boy up through adulthood, he was forced to work in Bell's saloon (also a house of ill repute) in New Orleans, and even made to assist in his owner's illegal activities.
