Historical Notes
Hypolite Chretien (Canadian) and Felecite Neda (Spanish) built Chretien Point Plantation between 1831 and 1835. The fathers of Hypolite and Felicite (along with Jean Lafitte) became friends during the war of 1812. The mansion was the center of a thriving 3,000-acre cotton plantation located along Bayou Bourbeau. The main house was built by slaves in the Adam style. The staircase for the movie Gone With The Wind was copied from the staircase at Chretien Point. After Hypolite died, Felicite continued to operate the plantation and increased landholdings by using her acute business acumen (and playing cards).
